Bitter Gourd is popularly known as Karela in India. It owes its name to its bitter taste. It is more famous for its medicinal properties that for taste. It has compounds that help relieve gastrointestinal disorders by treating toxic substances. Bitter Gourd has also been observed to be useful in treating malaria and diabetes. While consuming, seeds and pith should be removed, but peeling is not required. Soaking in salt water for sometime helps reduce the bitter taste.
